Father’s Day Without A Father: Neither Alone nor Forgotten

By Akosua Frempong, Ph.D.

Today, many women celebrate Father’s Day, some without their fathers. Their fathers may not have been present in their lives physically, emotionally, spiritually, or in other important ways, though they are alive. For those women and girls whose fathers were not present in their lives, helping, supporting, encouraging, affirming, and showing you that you are loved, precious, and significant, this message is for you. On this Father’s Day, I would like to minister to you. Yes, you! I want to tell you that you are not alone. And you are not forgotten. As God says in Isaiah 49: 15-16,

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget,
Yet I will not forget you.
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.”

God loves you unconditionally. Be assured: It is not your fault that you are without an earthly father, especially one who is not in your life while still alive. Also, just to let you know, your calling is too important to be impeded by the absence of your earthly father. I want to help you realize how loved and cherished you are by our Heavenly Father today and evermore. God says in Isaiah 43:4,

“Since you were precious in My sight,

You have been honored,

And I have loved you;

Therefore, I will give men for you,

And people for your life.”

Thus, you are faithfully honored, cherished, and valued by God.

On this day, be grateful to God that He is your Father. He is a Father to the Fatherless. Before we were born, He knew us and had a purpose for our lives and existence (Jeremiah 1:5). He formed us with His hands (Psalm 119:73; Psalm 139:13-18). He’s also your Defender. No matter what, He’s your Defender!

God says He will rejoice over us. He says in Zephaniah 3:17,

“The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

God will also give us what we need, even if our earthly fathers do not (Psalm 23). He is concerned for His children and His will, plan, purpose, and kingdom. He will not allow anyone else to determine your future or His plans for you.

Remember, you are not a mistake because God already knew everything about you before you existed. He still wanted you, loved you, called you, and gave you life. Our Heavenly Father made you accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6)! As long as you are His, He is pleased with you (Romans 8:8-9).

So, today, women of God, be encouraged! Stay in the Word. Take God at His Word. Be comforted by the Holy Spirit, who is our Comforter. And remember what the Word of God says: the God of all comfort will comfort us in everything so that we can comfort others with the same comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). Someday, God may use you to comfort others just as He is using me today to reassure you for His glory! Amen!
